Corn has been cultivated for thousands of years in the Americas. A precursor to popcorn was parched corn, which is crunchy and more similar to the snack Corn Nuts. Machinery developed in the late 1800s to pop it more quickly, and it became synonymous with movie theaters in the 1920s and 1930s.
