The State of Illinois already sued the company over spills of the radioactive chemical tritium near the Braidwood Nuclear Power Station.

Now, Will County’s Forest Preserve District is threatening legal action.

A leaky pipe passed near Will County’s Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserves.

Officials found no tritium there that could harm people, but the district wants Exelon to fund a study on tritium’s impact on animals and plants.

If the company doesn’t agree, the district will sue.

“Nature preserve is granted the highest degree of protection by the state of Illionis,” said Bruce Hodgdon, spokesman for Will County’s Forest Preserve District. “This is the special property that we own. As a consequence, any contamination of nature preserve property is an offense.”

The Will County Forest Preserve District is giving Exelon thirty days to respond.

An Exelon spokesperson says the company has not evaluated the district’s request yet.
