The National Transportation Safety Board started hearings today into an accident that occurred at Chicago’s Midway Airport in December.

Transcripts indicate pilots received conflicting reports before the plane skidded off the runway and struck a car, killing a 6-year-old boy.

As the pilots for the Southwest Airlines flight approached Midway, they were told runway conditions were good, fair, and then poor.

One of the pilots said, “If it’s poor, we don’t want to hear it.”

Alberto Rodriguez, the Chief of Operations at Midway, says airport crews had things under control the night of the accident.

“I don’t believe that there’s much, anything else we could’ve done,” Rodriguez says. “The snow that night was very manageable, be it a great amount occurred over a short amount of time.”

A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration testified the airport’s short runways contributed to the accident.
