The rivalry between the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune has a long history. The newest chapter involves a music video about Wrigley Field. The Sun Times had asked for video entries that urged Tribune CEO Sam Zell not to rename the home of the Cubs. And the Sun-Times chose an entry submitted by a Trib intern.

ambi: music video

That’s the music video that had the Sun-Times unwittingly calling the Tribune number one. Tribune reporter Kevin Pang helped create the video. He says it’s all just fun, but it does give the paper a boost.

PANG: It’s more about the history of this Chicago newspaper rivalry that we have that we take the most satisfaction in.

Today in both newspapers, you’ll find columns that take light hearted jabs at the other. The Tribune says it’s duped the Sun-Times. The Sun-Times says it’s surprised to learn the Tribune has a sense of humor.

Northwestern journalism professor Donna Leff says today’s rivarly is friendlier than it’s been in the past. In the ’20s and ’30s circulation trucks used to dump the competition’s papers. She says with television and the internet, the two papers aren’t fighting for readers in the same way they used to.

LEFF: It’s not whether you’ll read the Sun-Times or the Tribune. It’s whether you’ll read any newspaper at all.

But the music video has got both papers a little more attention.
