Cook County homeowners will soon have a shot at lowering their property assessments. The Cook County Board of Review will allow a new round of appeals, even though the window to contest property values is closed to most of the county right now. Commissioner Joseph Berrios says the board’s allowing the appeals because some neighborhoods are experiencing slow sales and lower closing prices.

BERRIOS: We’re giving people an  opportunity to come in here, lower their property taxes, hopefully that helps them save their homes. This isn’t a fix-all, but it’s one step in the process trying to help people in Cook County make sure they don’t pay more than they should.

Berrios says homeowners can include housing price data gathered from community groups or other sources during their appeal.

Cook County homeowners can file an assessment appeal between March 17th and March 31st.
