Chicago Mayor Richard Daley unveiled a billion dollar plan to build 24 new public schools.

15 new elementary schools and nine new high schools will be built over the next six years.

Daley says a majority of the money for the new buildings will come from taxes the city has already set aside.

“Hardly any of this money has come from Washington D.C. Very small amount,” he says. “And for the last three years, all the way down in Springfield, we have received nothing from Springfield for capital improvements.”

Daley says Chicago Public School’s bond funds will help pay for the schools.

He also says he supports Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s plan to privatize the lottery to fund education.
