Hollywood is coming to Chicago’s West Side. A $9 million film called “Humboldt Park” will bring hundreds of cast and crew members to that largely Puerto Rican neighborhood in February. But some local leaders say the filmmakers are showing disrespect for the community.

The story revolves around a Puerto Rican family reunion in Humboldt Park over the holidays. The stars include Freddy Rodriguez, who grew up nearby. The script came from a Mexican American who spent years in Chicago. And the producers are a duo from the Chicago area whose films include “Soul Food” and “Barbershop,” both set on the South Side. One of them, Robert Teitel, has family ties to Humboldt Park.

TEITEL: We’re going to do our best to show the neighborhood in a positive light. And to have pride for the Latin community, and try to show a slice of Chicago that no one has seen and a slice of Latin culture that really hasn’t been portrayed positively on film yet.

A casting director, line producer and location scout have been working in Chicago for weeks. But several neighborhood leaders are upset that they haven’t heard from the filmmakers except for calls mining them for contacts. The Puerto Rican Cultural Center’s José López wants the film to touch on the struggle against gentrification. And he’d like the production to include local businesses and youth groups. López proposes that the filmmakers hold a community forum.

LOPEZ: This doesn’t have to be anything that’s adversarial. But, rather, “OK, we have not engaged the community. How is it that we are able to do this between now and February to make it a more meaningful and relevant experience?”

The producers say they’ve been too busy to meet with neighborhood groups, but will start soon.
