Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says a plan requiring people in Massachusetts to have health insurance wouldn’t work in Illinois.

She says the Illinois budget doesn’t have the revenue to take on such a project.

“Painfully, in Illinois, we’re still dealing with the problem where our Medicaid bills are being paid with a great amount of delay and so the providers are really bearing the brunt of that when it sounds as if that had already changed in Massachusetts,” Madigan says.

Madigan says Massachusetts is partly funding the program with a pool worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

She says she doesn’t know where Illinois officials would begin in putting that kind of money together.
