Illinois has taken a step to fight neglect of seniors. This time, the law will help protect older people from themselves.

The recent heat wave has health officials watching the elderly for signs of heat related illness. But Illinois legislators worried about what happens to vulnerable seniors the rest of the year.

Illinois just passed a law that will require the state to follow up on reports of senior self-neglect. It’s aimed to curb cases where the elderly fail in day-to-day care, like dressing for extremely hot or cold weather. Supporters say the law fills a gap in the state’s effort to cut overall abuse of the elderly.

Starting this January, social service agencies will watch for seniors who aren’t taking care of themselves. When they find them, they can link them with services they need, such as Meals on Wheels.
