The emerald ash borer has been spotted in north suburban Wilmette. The beetle has killed millions of ash trees in the Midwest.

Jeff Squibb, a spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Agriculture, says there are at least 16 infested trees in the north side neighborhood.

“We will have our inspectors in Wilmette for the next several weeks conducting a more extensive survey to determine the actual severity of the situation,” he says.

Squibb says the beetle hitches a ride when people move infested firewood from one place to another. The beetle was also discovered in Kane County last month.
