Soldiers, sailors, and other active military personnel could soon hop the CTA for free. The same goes for disabled veterans. The free rides program comes after Chicago agreed to contribute to CTA pensions. CTA President Ron Huberman says he’s committed to the idea, but the details need work.

HUBERMAN: State law dictates who provides free rides relative to the transit in the area. Obviously, the lawyers are going to sit down and take a look at the specific ordinance.

Huberman says the legalese isn’t the only thing to clear up; there’s the question of cost, too.

HUBERMAN: We can’t quantify it yet, because obviously we don’t ask members of the military or others to disclose themselves we may get on themselves.

The Chicago City Council wants its free rides program running by April.
