A neighborhood on Chicago’s Near West Side will be a little quieter.

A historic church has agreed to silence its bells at 9 p.m. instead of 11.

The bells at Saint John Cantius Church have been ringing for over a hundred years.

But two of the church’s neighbors complained to Chicago’s Department of Environment about the noise level.

A spokesperson for the church confirms they’ve reached an agreement to shorten the time the bells play.

Kelly Pritchard lives across the street from the church.

She says the bells don’t bother her or her infant.

“For me personally, I always feel safer,” Pritchard says. “For some odd reason, the bells just make me feel safer just ‘cause I’m around a church. It just feels good.”

Pritchard says the bells are useful for keeping time.

The bells ring every 15 minutes starting at six in the morning.
