Chicago’s historic and cultural communities receive state recognition
Chicago is now home to seven state-designated cultural districts.
Earlier this week, Gov. JB Pritzker announced seven areas across Chicago as official cultural districts: Bronzeville, Chinatown, Clark Street/Camino Clark in Rogers Park, Mahalia Jackson 79th Street Cultural District in Chatham, Little Village, Puerto Rico Town in Humboldt Park and the South Chicago Cultural District. The governor also included cultural districts in Champaign and Springfield.
This distinction will allow organizations located in those districts to apply for $3 million dollars of state funding to back efforts to preserve those communities.
Reset discusses the significance of two Chicago cultural districts and learns how state funding could support preservation efforts in Humboldt Park, Chinatown and Chatham.
