Chicago aldermen are considering a new way to give themselves a pay raise.

The City Council’s Budget Committee was set to discuss a $20 thousand pay raise that would go into effect over the next four years. But the aldermen were hesitant to take action.

Bernie Stone, who introduced the ordinance, says aldermen may be afraid to give themselves a raise because it’ll look bad come November.

“I think all of you know how hard you work. If you don’t work hard then you’re not doing your job, quite frankly, and if you’re going to stand reelection you won’t be reelected,” he says.

But Alderman Freddrenna Lyle says the raise should be a percentage that corresponds with the cost of living instead of a flat rate.

The committee will consult with legal council before discussing it again.
