Chicago is considering expanding a pilot curbside recycling program. As many as 700 homes in the Beverly neighborhood separate recyclables into blue bins. Everyone else in Chicago tosses recyclables into blue bags collected with other trash.

Chicago’s Department of Environment may now expand the curbside program into a few more neighborhoods.

That doesn’t sit well with 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore.

“The bottom line is that, while expanding the program to additional wards is a step in the right direction, it’s only a step. What we really need is a comprehensive city-wide curbside recycling program,” he says.

The Department of Environment hasn’t released details about any expansion. Officials say it’s not clear where the money will come from. If the plan goes through, the department could announce which neighborhoods will participate within a few weeks.
