A federal court has dealt a blow to leaders of a Chicago suburb who want to crack down on undocumented immigrants. Chicago Public Radio’s Chip Mitchell reports.

An ordinance in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, would have punished employers and landlords of illegal immigrants. But a U.S. judge ruled Thursday it would have violated due process rights. Dozens of towns have passed similar measures. Northwest of Chicago, Carpentersville put one on hold last fall. Now Trustee Keith Hinz says he’ll help come up with a new plan.

HINZ: Something that will have some teeth in it, but not a situation where we end up with a lawsuit.

About 40 percent of Carpentersville’s 37,000 residents have Mexican roots. Most of the rest, European.

REALZOLA: If we keep grappling on this issue, we’re not going to go anywhere.

Realtor Silvia Realzola says businesses and families will avoid Carpentersville.
