Undocumented immigrants and others caught driving in northwest suburban Carpentersville without a license would face a stiff fine to retrieve their vehicle. That’s under a proposal the village board will discuss tonight. Chicago Public Radio’s Chip Mitchell reports.

Carpentersville put proposed penalties against landlords and employers of undocumented immigrants on hold last fall. But tonight the board will talk about expanding police powers to impound vehicles of motorists without a driver’s license or insurance. Village Manager Craig Anderson says that wouldn’t be the only change.

ANDERSON: If someone is using the car in the commission of a crime or felony or related to it, the village could impound the car and quite frankly collect the processing fee for having to tow the car and deal with all the paperwork and all those sorts of things.

But Village Trustee Linda Ramírez-Sliwinski says it’s wrong to pick on unlicensed drivers to raise revenue.

RAMÍREZ-SLIWINSKI: We need to stop being the bad big brother.

Carpentersville immigrant advocates leafleted against the proposal over the weekend. They’re hoping for a big turnout at tonight’s board meeting.
