Food nourishes our bodies, tantalizes our senses, and inspires our creativity. Moreover, it permeates our cultural traditions and helps define who we are. Noted food anthropologists Martin Manalansan of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Mary Weismantel of Northwestern University present key insights developed in this fast-emerging field. Going far beyond an exploration of the different foodstuffs consumed around the globe, they examine how food gives meaning to our lives, how it functions in a global economy, how it traces and remaps routes of migration, and the way taste blends with our other senses.
