Amtrak announced major security changes today. The rail service will now deploy mobile security teams at stations and trains in the Washington-to-Boston corridor. That means officers will make random inspections of both checked and carry-on baggage. Spokesman Marc Magliari says it’s not clear when Chicago will see this extra security.

MAGLIARI: More than half of our passenger volume is in the Northeast, so it makes sense for us to start there. Whatever innovations or changes that will be made as its system makes its way across the country will be made based on how things go on the Northeast.

Chicago is Amtrak’s fourth-busiest city. Magliari says the change is not a result from a specific threat. Instead, he says it mimics what he calls an “admirable” security system in New York’s subways.
