Democratic Party leaders will hold to a July timetable for decisions about Cook County Board President John Stroger’s political future.

That’s according to Chicago Alderman William Beavers, who heads the city’s Democratic Party.

Stroger has not been heard from publicly since he had a stroke more than three months ago.

Beavers says he and others will coordinate with the Stroger family members, who has said it will announce the president’s plans next month.

“Being the chairman of the Democratic Party for the city, it will be up to us, the Cook County Chairman Tom Lyons, the suburban chairmans, and we’ll all get together and we’ll select whoever he decides, or if he decides not to run,” he says.

Beavers says he hasn’t been given a July date for the family’s decision.

He also says he hopes John Stroger will be able to participate in any public announcement about his political intentions.

The alderman made his remarks at a weekend event marking Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of slavery.
