WBEZ Chicago welcomes new intern class for Summer 2023, providing hands-on learning to early career journalists & professionals

CHICAGO (April 7, 2023) – WBEZ Chicago is pleased to announce a new class of interns who will join the staff for Summer 2023. The five new interns include students, early career journalists and professionals.

WBEZ introduced its intern program in 2006. The intern program is designed to train, develop and inspire the next generation of journalists, providing a hands-on learning experience across many departments including audio and digital news, events, show production and more.

“WBEZ is proud to offer early career development opportunities through our intern program, and we’re excited to welcome five talented new interns to our team,” said Stephanie Bassill, WBEZ’s Talent Manager. “Welcome to Loren, Nadia, Ysa, Noah and Riley!”

Loren Ames will join WBEZ as an Events Intern on the Community Engagement and Live Events team. Ames is a sound artist from New Hampshire. She got her start in event production mixing bands at Bard College, where she studied sculpture.

Nadia Hernandez is the new Production Intern on Reset with Sasha-Ann Simons, WBEZ’s daily talk show. Hernandez is a junior studying journalism and gender studies at DePaul University. She is also the President of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists DePaul chapter.

WBEZ’s new Digital News Intern is Ysa Quiballo. Quiballo is pursuing a bachelor’s of science degree in journalism at Northwestern University. She also produces video and graphic design content for STITCH Magazine, Scene+Heard Magazine, and the fashion startup, Naranji.

Noah Jennings starts at WBEZ as the Audio News Intern. Jennings received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Columbia College Chicago, where he served as co-editor-in-chief for the award-winning Columbia Chronicle. Jennings’ work has been recognized by the Chicago Journalists Association, the Illinois College Press Association, the College Media Association and the National Scholastic Press Association.

Finally, Riley Donahue is WBEZ’s new Design Intern serving on WBEZ’s marketing team. She earned her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she honed her typographic and composition skills. As a designer and visual communicator, Donahue also has worked for education-based nonprofit organizations.
