By Ashish ValentineA couple of weeks ago, Worldview was on the road, broadcasting from locations around the Midwest and lower Ontario to explore how global issues like water insecurity, race and indigenous rights play out in Chicago’s own backyard.
In Detroit, we heard from Namira Islam, co-founder and community engagement director at the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative, or Muslim ARC. Muslim ARC is a Detroit-based organization that sprang out of a conversation between Muslims on Twitter about diversity within American and global Muslim communities. Namira talked with Worldview’s Ashish Valentine about the organization’s work, and how it’s informed by the concept of “Critical Anti-Islamophobia,” the idea that combating Islamophobia is impossible without also addressing racism and colorism within Muslim communities, as well as structural racism, white supremacy and military interventionism at a national and global level.
