The city’s plan for constructing new public schools and annexes for existing schools is exacerbating racial and economic segregation among CPS students. That’s one of the chief takeaways for a recent investigative report from WBEZ reporters Becky Vevea and Sarah Karp.

During his tenure, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has spent millions of dollars to expand schools that serve an increasingly white, middle-class demographic despite the fact that nearby schools that serve largely black, poor populations have plenty of space for extra students. His administration has not moved school district lines in order to encourage more school integration.

Morning Shift talks to Becky Vevea and Sarah about their investigation and what it means for parents, students, and the city as a whole.
