Schools haven’t let out for summer yet, but Cook County Commissioners are already thinking about back-to-school shopping. Commissioners tomorrow will consider a sales tax holiday for nine days in August. Commissioner Peter Silvestri co-sponsored the measure.

SILVESTRI: The time to return to school is a very financially challenging time for many families in our Cook County area, so we’re basically saying, for a week or so, we’re going to give you a break, and go out and make all of your purchases, shop in Cook County and you will be given a lower tax rate for that particular period.

The Cook County sales tax holiday would not include all items, though. Only clothes, school supplies and computers would qualify.
