2nd Ward Alderman Madeline Haithcock spent months trying to get a street sign named after Fred Hampton.

He was the chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party. Chicago police officers killed Hampton in raid in 1969.

Alderman Haithcock says Hampton deserves to be remembered. “I think he would have done some good for us. I wish we had somebody now that could do that. I really do,” she said.

The alderman said she couldn’t muster the votes this time around, but she’ll keep pushing the issue. That might be tough, though. Mayor Richard Daley and several alderman want to end the practice of creating new honorary street signs.
