Hundreds of people gathered outside Saints Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood Thursday afternoon to protest Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The neighborhood, on the city’s Near West Side, has been home to Ukrainian residents for decades. The protest featured Ukrainian flags and signs denouncing Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier, President Joe Biden issued a new round of sanctions aimed partly at Russian banks and oligarchs. The news came as Russian forces moved further into Ukraine with reports of injuries and deaths in the first major war in Europe in decades.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot condemned Putin and said Chicagoans should show solidarity with local Ukrainians.
