Nerdette gets a pile of recommendations from New York Times TV critic Margaret Lyons.
By Greta JohnsenFor the last couple of weeks, the Nerdette series “The Introvert’s Guide to the Good Life” has been all about helping you find ways to enrich and entertain your perhaps-more-than-usual indoors-based life.
This week we checked in with TV critic Margaret Lyons of The New York Times about four great new TV shows to watch right now.
Lyons told us that each of the following shows fits into that “Just-feed-it-to-me-like grapes” model that we all so desperately crave right now. (And of course, we field some TV recommendations from listeners, too!)
Never Have I Ever on Netflix
Margaret Lyons: It’s nice to see a show where everyone is actually behaving pretty well. You would be very proud to have raised any of those characters. Like, the goal of being a person is not to have never done anything wrong, it’s that you learned from that experience and you didn’t do it twice, or you tried to do it better, or whatever. I really liked its take on modern teens.
Normal People on Hulu
Lyons: A lot of modern shows have a lot of tricks up their sleeves. And it’s not always bad, but sometimes that cleverness is a vice. And it’s interesting to see a show kind of go in this totally other direction where it’s so minimal and so bare and so stark.
RUN on HBO
Lyons: Run is about this couple who was together in the past and they made this pact that they would reunite if one of them texted “RUN” to the other person. There’s action stuff, but also “Who-are-we-to-each-other?” stuff. It’s strange and very funny and very horny.
Upload on Amazon Prime Video
Lyons: This guy’s consciousness is uploaded into the afterlife and it’s just sort of a recreation of the exact problems of Earth, which is that rich people get lots of stuff and poor people don’t.
