Steppenwolf’s new production, La Ruta, tells the story of the women who live, work, and disappear along the route to the U.S.-owned factories in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Since the early 1990s, hundreds of young women have gone missing and hundreds of those missing women have later been found mutilated and murdered.

La Ruta is inspired by real testimonies and shows the devastating reality of the violence women Ciudad Juárez face every day. It also exposes how individuals and institutions are complicit in that violence. But it’s also a story about friendship, resilience and survival after trauma and loss.

Morning Shift talks to the playwright and director of La Ruta about bringing this powerful story to the stage.
