After a decade abroad, journalist Evan Osnos was surprised to find America’s foundational moral commitments under attack. In his new book, he searches for the reasons why and how American culture and politics have changed by visiting three different places he lived in: Chicago; Greenwich, Conn.; and Clarksburg, W. Va.
