“On Wednesday, the Chicago City Council passed a measure that will ban foie gras in city restaurants.

Foie gras is the fatty liver of ducks or geese that have been force fed.

Animal rights activists say the feeding is painful to birds.

Alderman Joe Moore sponsored the measure.
He defends the work it took to get it passed. ""The fact that there are these other issues that are crying out for our attention doesn’t mean that we can’t take a bit of time and address this issue as well,"" he said.

Chicago is the first major city in the US to ban foie gras.

The state of California has passed a ban that will go into effect in 2012.

City restaraunts must stop selling foie gras by June.“
