Chicago prides itself on its downtown lakefront. Now, the city’s bent on improving access to its other signature body of water, the Chicago River. Currently, two bridges interrupt foot paths that run along the river from the lakefront to Wabash Avenue. The city wants underpasses built beneath those bridges this year. Project director Michelle Woods says there’d be more extensions in the future.

WOODS: When the master plan on the riverwalk is realized, I could imagine that families might come down with Metra and walk across the lake Street bridge, then walk all the way along the river, all the way to the lakefront.

Woods says the underpasses could cost up to $10 million. The money would come from a Tax Increment Financing District that expires this year.
