Cassie Walker Burke is WBEZ’s external editor and works on the digital news desk. Prior to joining WBEZ, she founded the Chicago bureau of the national education news nonprofit Chalkbeat and led an award-winning team that was recognized by the Education Writers Association, the Chicago Headline Club, LION and the Society of Professional Journalists.
Her past roles include assistant managing editor of Crain’s Chicago Business, where she served on the editorial board and produced weekly small business news segments for WBBM, and she is the former executive editor of Chicago magazine. Her first journalism job was as an education reporter at the LaGrange Daily News, and her writing has appeared in Politico, the Chicago Tribune, and O, the Oprah Magazine. She holds an M.S.J. from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and has taught magazine writing and editing at both Medill and DePaul University.
