CHICAGO (August 17, 2021) — Today the Radio Television Digital News Association announced its 2021 National Edward R. Murrow Award recipients, naming WBEZ Chicago as the winner of the Large Market Radio Podcast Award for the third season of its investigative podcast, Motive.

In the third season of Motive, host Odette Yousef investigated the rise of white supremacy, extremism, and the rise of the youth hate movement in America. Over the span of eight episodes, listeners learn about the origins of the youth hate movement in America, the role that music played in spreading racist propaganda, and the allure that far-right extremism continues to have for young, white men.

“With right-wing extremism on the rise worldwide, this season of Motive helps explain how we got here, through intimate and illuminating interviews, punk music and captivating storytelling,” said Kevin Dawson, managing director of content development for WBEZ Chicago and executive producer of the podcast. “We hope it will help listeners to better understand today’s white supremacist movement.”
